Focus Group welcomes filmmakers Rachel Stuckey and Lee Webster, who will lead a workshop that explores cameraless animation. This form of animation, also known as direct animation, involves the application of materials directly onto 16mm filmstrips, which results in gorgeous, abstract animations. Preceded by a short screening and a brief lecture on the history of the medium, the all-day workshop will demonstrate how to draw, paint, etch, and collage directly onto 16mm film to create beautiful and rhythmic moving pictures. A screening at the end of the workshop will premiere the participants’ animations and also feature a curated selection of seminal and contemporary filmmakers working in the medium. The screening is open to the public, so participants are encouraged to invite friends and family! See the page on the Visual Arts Center for additional info.

All materials will be provided. Capacity is limited to 20 participants, so please contact Xochi Solis at xochisolis@utvac.org by March 1 to reserve your spot.

Rachel Stuckey is a moving-image artist and native Austinite, who works primarily in video, film, and across media in live-action and animation to make exploratory non-narrative films. She holds a BFA in Experimental Filmmaking from the University of Colorado at Boulder and is currently a graduate student in Transmedia at The University of Texas at Austin.

Lee Webster is an Austin-based working artist, teacher, and founding member of the video-art collective, Austin Video Bee. Webster received her BA from Sarah Lawrence College in 2006. Her practice incorporates film, video, installation, and public projects, which have been shown at the Texas Biennial, Fusebox Festival, Arthouse at the Jones Center, Sofa Gallery, Domy Books, and Co-lab in Austin; Sarah Lawrence College in New York; Danger Danger Gallery in Philadelphia; and Box 13 in Houston.

1CC37C4C-F8B8-4054-9CC6-E548C5C38D88The Visual Arts Center (VAC) is positioned as a place for the intersection of art education and art evolution. The center is a new exhibition and research space within the Department of Art and Art History at The University of Texas at Austin that will highlight internationally acclaimed artists, as well as students, faculty, and alumni through multiple programs. An adaptive reuse of the space in the Art Building previously inhabited by the Jack S. Blanton Museum, the VAC was designed by renowned architects Lake | Flato and provides an additional 22,000 square feet of space to the department.

The Visual Arts Center draws together a uniquely diverse arts community of students, alumni, faculty, guest artists and creative voices from around the world. This beautiful facility — with its airy hall, collegial gathering space and inspiring art exhibits — forms the new intellectual and emotional center of this dynamic community.
