Experimental Response Cinema and the Alamo Drafthouse at the Ritz are proud to host a screening of DAREDEVILS, with filmmaker Stephanie Barber in person! Receiving its world premiere at the NY Film Festival’s Views from the Avant-Garde, DAREDEVILS is the first of two screenings featuring Barber’s work. Come see the film described as giving “utterance to the power of cinematic haikus, while juxtaposing three film segments (or lines), and separating them with a kireji. [Barber] belongs to a territory that underscores the subjective and lyrical, a playground of artistic milieu. Her words evolve from the mouths of wounds, often expressed with a smile. Her film manifests an intolerance of rules, exhilarating thinking, and commercial disobedience, through two monologues, a dialogue, and a song.” (Lumiere Magazine)

“Here, the excitement of ideas, and of seeing, functions like the rising and falling of serotonin levels, moments of ecstasy leading to inevitably painful ends. Moments bend within that split second when happiness turns into melancholy on contact with the intellect.”  (The Brooklyn Rail)

DAREDEVILS
85 minutes / digital / sound / 2013
A portrait of risk and language, the experimental narrative DAREDEVILS, presents a writer as she interviews a well-known artist and feels the reverberations of their discussion throughout her day. Visually spare, still and verbose, the video considers three formal handlings of language—a dialog, two monologues and a song.
Starring KimSu Theiler, Flora Coker & Adam Robinson and featuring the voices of Susan Howe and Jenny Graf, DAREDEVILS constructs a metaphor of an artist’s life and work as daredevilry.
The piece sits gently between video art, narrative and poetic essay. The classic rising action, climax and denouement are sculpted, not by cause and effect, but by the subtle movements to and from understanding that are inherent in conversation. Bubbles of intimacy are blown and popped, begin to be blown again.
